How to brew V60 coffee step by step

The V60 is one of the easiest ways to get the best out of specialty coffee at home. It takes little equipment and a few minutes.

What you need

  • 15 g of freshly ground coffee (medium grind, like coarse salt)
  • 250 g of water between 92 and 96 °C
  • A V60, a paper filter, and a scale

Step by step

  1. Rinse the filter with hot water to remove the papery taste and warm the cup. Discard that water.
  2. Add the coffee and make a small well in the center.
  3. Bloom: pour 45 g of water and wait 30 seconds. The coffee swells and releases CO₂ — a sign of freshness.
  4. Pour in slow circles until you reach 250 g, in two or three additions.
  5. The whole drawdown should take between 2:30 and 3:00 minutes.

Dialing it in

  • Bitter or dry? Grind a little coarser.
  • Sour or watery? Grind a little finer.

Change one variable at a time and note what you do. Within a few cups you'll find your sweet spot.
